Commonplace

Gulliver breaks the strings on his left arm, and lies still only after a second volley of arrows. Soon he calls his surrender “the promise of honour I made them,” adding, “for so I interpreted my submissive behaviour.” Bracket every reason he gives for sparing the little people. Which of them would he have had without the arrows?

At the close of Chapter I, Gulliver’s Travels.
