Commonplace

Wrecked on a strange coast, Aeneas tells his men, “This too sometime we shall haply remember with delight.” Then the teller shows us his face: he “feigns hope,” keeping his anguish “hidden deep in his breast.” Copy the speech’s last sentence and the sentence after it, one under the other. Is the speech a lie, and is a leader right to make it?

At the close of Book I, The Aeneid.
