“I cannot persuade myself,” Plutarch says, that Lycurgus began the secret killing of Helots, judging by “the gentleness of his disposition.” Earlier, without a word against it, Plutarch tells how the elders sent puny newborns to “a sort of chasm under Taygetus.” Copy his defense, then find the newborns again. How good is his reason for acquitting Lycurgus?
