Satan lies on the burning lake as huge as Leviathan, the sea-beast that the pilot of “some small night-foundered skiff” takes for an island and moors beside. Then the poem adds that Satan rises only by “high permission of all-ruling Heaven.” What does the comparison do to his grandeur? Underline the words that make him vast, and circle any that unsettle you.
