Commonplace

Thrasymachus scoffs that the shepherd fattens his flock for “himself or his master.” Socrates answers that such a shepherd tends the sheep “like a mere diner,” and that wages belong to a separate “art of pay.” Is Socrates’ shepherd a real one? Number the steps of his reply, and mark the one Thrasymachus should have pressed.

At the close of Book I, The Republic.
