Commonplace

Early on, Hawthorne says an author may speak of himself and still “keep the inmost Me behind its veil.” Then he imagines his Puritan forefathers scorning him as “A writer of story-books!” and tells how the old letter, laid on his breast, seemed to burn. Has he stayed within his own limits? Bracket the two or three places where the veil seems thinnest.

At the close of “The Custom-House,” The Scarlet Letter.
